Quit Smoking Excuses to Bury for Good

Monday, September 27th, 2010

The three biggest excuses to not quit, are covered and stomped on here. Do not put off your quit date any longer, you can quit, and your biggest excuses are taken down here.

1. I will gain weight, and it will be even unhealthier for me to quit smoking and gain weight. Can you believe what you are saying here? You would have to add like, well, over 100 pounds for this to be true. Unless you plan on shoveling food into your mouth, you will never gain that much weight. It just won’t happen. Plus, if you quit, and you are really ready to quit, you want to quit, you are going to tackle this with a better mindset than just eating to cover your smoking cravings. You are going to feel better, you will be able to walk better, you can exercise more, your lung capacity is going to improve, and you are going to actually lose weight! I dare you to quit smoking and gain weight. You are an amazing talented and smart person, you can take this challenge on with amazing results. Go get them!

2. I will not be able to quit with my spouse, friends all smoking. We will have to do it together. This is tough, but boy, as you go through a change in your life, like dedicating yourself to quitting this unhealthy lifestyle, you have to start thinking for yourself. If you continue the teenage lifestyle practice, that started you into this nightmare of smoking, how are you going to evolve, and adapt into a new and recognizable person? You are more powerful, more mature, and smarter than that follower and pack member. You are the alpha leader of your group, and once you quit, show your resolve, and your success, you will not be alone. Be the best part of your group of friends and family, and step forward, and lead the way!

3. I can’t do it right now, bad timing for me. I will wait until,…. Ok, this wait until thing, has been going on for like, 20 years or more! Stop it! You have to take action now. You cannot continue this destructive path that you are on, besides you probably don’t even remember how to think without cigarettes. Any time, no matter how bad, is the right time. Even if you lose your best friend to cancer, this is the right time. You need to take control, and use this bad time as the trigger! It will be so powerful for you, can you imagine? You can use this negative time for a positive result. Wow, I can’t wait to see what you uncover next after you stop smoking. Stand aside world, you are out to get things really going.

Do not, do not, stop your motivation to quit smoking for one reason, or another. If you are creating reasons, excuses or maybe you are calling them realities, I want you to tear them down. There is no reason to not quit smoking. You just need to really want to do it!

Use your power, use your experiences, and open your mind to your new reality. It is a big, brand new day that you are going to enjoy and conquer. Don’t let anything stand in your way!

The World Health Organization has some alarming statistics, regarding smoking and death. The W.H.O. reports that only 1-3% of smokers who try to quit without support success. Don’t be one of the 97% who fail!

Stress and Anxiety Disorders In Everyday Life

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Anxiety disorders are probably more common today than ever before. This is partly due to the fact that we are able to diagnose and recognize anxiety symptoms better. But it is also because the rate of change in society has increased exponentially over the past twenty years or so putting more stress on everyone involved.

Today, there are so many kinds of stress that are present in people. There are small stresses such as a student worrying about how well he will do on a test. And there are more serious stresses such as a person with cancer wondering if the latest treatment will be the one that finally works.

Sometimes anxiety attacks are predictable. For example, if you are afraid of public speaking and you are scheduled to give a speech, you know ahead of time that you will become more anxious as the event approaches. In fact, this situation can result in somewhat of a feedback loop where the simple expectation that you will become more anxious will in fact make you more anxious. Other times, however, anxiety attacks will come on suddenly with no warning. This can happen in the case of a woman walking at night through a strange neighborhood and realizing that she is all alone.

A common sign of an anxiety disorder is that the person is experiencing high levels of anxiety in situations where a normal person would not feel anxious. A perfect example of this is the condition known as agoraphobia. This is a fear of being in crowds or in social situations that are uncontrolled. It is also manifested in the fear of a person afraid to leave his home. This is a situation where a normal person would not think twice about interacting with strangers, but a person with an anxiety disorder may well be paralyzed in simply thinking about it.

Although anxiety disorders are easier to diagnose than ever before, one thing that does make them a bit more difficult to recognize is that not everyone has the same symptoms when they are anxious. For example, one person may sweat profusely when anxious while another will simply stand paralyzed, and unable to react to the events around him.

On the other hand, what makes identification easier, is that psychologists and therapists now are able to quickly recognize the many different types of reactions to anxiety. Regardless of the cause, however, the cures and solutions are becoming more well known. And this is what makes the many cures for anxiety on the horizon a lot more exciting.

More on Asthma and Vitamin D

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Another article looking at the importance of vitamin D in patients with asthma has just been published in Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

The authors, MS Sandhu and TB Casele, point out that evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency is associated with lung airway over-responsiveness, worse asthma control, and possibly resistance of asthma patients being able to respond to steroid treatment.

They point out that the cells in the lung show high amounts of the enzyme necessary to convert vitamin D to the activated vitamin D within the lung.

This activated vitamin D has been shown to inhibit the manufacture of certain molecules that promote inflammation in the lung. Therefore having sufficient vitamin D would contribute to less lung inflammation, which is the cause of asthma.

They also point out that vitamin D in the lung helps manufacture several natural anti-infective molecules that can help prevent infections, like bronchitis.

The authors made the hypothesis that vitamin D supplementation may lead to improved asthma control, and indeed that is exactly what I see in my practice. All of my patients with asthma have their vitamin D levels optimized.

If you or your family has problems with asthma, including childhood asthma please be sure your vitamin D levels are optimized.

Oral Problem Prevention

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Many people today are facing oral problems like bad breath and tooth decay. How can this be prevented?

Below are common mouth problems and ways to prevent it:

Gingivitis

One of the most common problems that a person will get from not taking proper care of their mouth is gingivitis. Gingivitis is a case wherein the gums in your mouth swell. One of the common causes for gingivitis is the buildup of plaque around the teeth. These plaques bring bacteria causes your gum to be irritated and swollen, the gum may easily bleed.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a case wherein the bone that holds the person’s teeth in place is being invaded and destroyed by bacteria. The attack usually occurs when gingivitis is left unattended or not cured. When periodontitis occurs, the gums may recede therefore exposing the roots and making the teeth more sensitive to heat and cold. In worst cases, the teeth may also loosen from the gums due to bone destruction.

Bad Breath

Having a bad smelling breath is another very common and obvious case of bad oral health. Having a bad breath is usually caused by the buildup of bacteria in your mouth. Bacteria accumulate through the food that is left in your mouth, especially those in between your teeth. These bacteria release chemical called sulfur, the sulfur that these bacteria release is what causes you to have bad breath.

CARING FOR YOUR MOUTH

Choosing your Toothbrush – Proper care for your mouth starts from properly choosing the toothbrush for you. When buying for a toothbrush, look for one that is soft to your gum, has soft bristles, can effectively clean your teeth and can easily get inside your mouth.

If you have a good amount of budget, you can then buy electric toothbrushes; they are most effective in removing plaques. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and visit your dentist every six months.

It is also recommended that after brushing your teeth you have to follow it up with a mouth wash.

Toothpaste – Toothpastes are essential in maintaining a good oral hygiene. Look for toothpastes that have fluoride in them, this helps prevent cavities that damage your gums.

Floss – Flossing is another way of taking care of your mouth. It helps remove plaques and foods left in between your teeth. It also helps prevent gum problems. Flossing once a day is enough already. Night time is the best to floss and breakfast.
