The end-result is that foul breath is emitted through the breath. Hot Cereals – The Overlooked Breakfast

Monday, October 4th, 2010

We live in a world of high sugar breakfasts. When you go to the store, there are countless brightly colored boxes full of delicious and sugar packed cereal. Whole aisles are dedicated to these cereals full of empty carbohydrates and usually in the corner, hidden somewhere, is the small selection of hot cereals and porridges: the forgotten breakfast. Porridges such as oatmeal, cream of wheat, and cornmeal have seem to be forsaken in this high sugar nutrition-less world. Maybe it is time that you thought about going back to hot cereals though.

Hot cereals are packed with nutrition, not just sugar like the more mainstream kid’s cereals. Unlike most cold cereals, they are not processed carbohydrates so they retain most of their nutrition. When you process a grain to make them into ‘o’ shapes or whatever the desired form is, much of the vitamins such as vitamin C breaks down or is lost in the process. With porridges, there is minimum processing and the nutrition is not lost. It is like white an whole wheat bread: whole wheat bread is not as processed as the white and this is why they say its more healthy.

Hot cereals do not take as much time to prepare as you may think. All you need is 5 minutes or so and you will have a nice hot pot of cereal. There is little preperation and clean up is minimal as well. Just heat up so milk or water, and when it is hot put in the cereal while stirring. Once the mixture has the right consistency, just let it stand for a minute or two and enjoy! People often mistakenly think that making porridges a time consuming and difficult task. Hot cereals are also much more filling than cold cereals. It takes longer for your digestive system to break down the complex carbohydrates in the porridges and you will feel full longer. With cold cereals, your digestive system has to do little work since the carbohydrates are already processed and usually in the form of sugars.

There are also many things you can add to your oatmeal or cream of wheat to make them more tasty! You can add Fresh fruit such as apple or bananas, berries, brown sugar, maple syrup, etc. You can also add things like ice cream, but I would not recommend that. You want to be healthy right?

There are countless reasons why you should stop buying for your fruit ‘o’s or whatever kids cereal you enjoy in the morning and pick up hot cereals instead. They may not taste as good initially, but after eating hot cereals for a week or two, you wont want to go back to your cold cereals!
